Coleman was born in Blackpool Lancashire. Coleman attended Arnold School in Blackpool where she was the head girl. She also received straight As on her A-levels. While discussing her Emmerdale appearance Coleman confessed that she regretted not going to the university. When she was at school, Coleman was a part of a theater company named In Yer Space with whom she was a part of the Edinburgh Festival in the play Crystal Clear. Steven Moffat, the producer of Doctor Who confirmed in a 21st March 2012 press conference that Coleman will portray Matt Smith's companion after Karen Gillan left.
